Understanding rarities lets you better read a set's probabilities and make smarter opening choices.
Main rarities explained
- Rare (★): base level of the rare+ slot, ~46% in standard sets
- Double Rare: ex/V cards with gold border — most common 'real' hit
- Ultra Rare: full-art ex/V/VSTAR/VMAX cards, ~14% of slot
- Illustration Rare (IR): extended full-art, ~10% of slot
- Special Illustration Rare (SIR): most sought-after, ~4.5% in most sets
- Hyper Rare: fully gold textured card, ~1–4% of slot
- Mega Hyper Rare: exclusive to Mega Evolution series, ~0.5%
Why rarities matter for your purchases
Once you know your target rarity, you can quickly estimate whether a 2, 6 or 9-pack product fits your goal. Chasing a SIR? You need volume (ETBs or bigger boxes). Happy with Double Rares? Even a blister gives you reasonable odds.

FAQ
Where is the rarity symbol on a Pokémon card?
Check the bottom-right corner (bottom-left on some promos): a letter (C, U, R) or star/diamond symbol depending on the era. In Scarlet & Violet sets, the rare+ slot bundles RR, AR, IR, SIR and HR in the same pack.
What's the difference between Double Rare (RR) and Ultra Rare (AR)?
RR covers ex/V cards with a gold border — the most common real hit in the rare+ slot. AR (full-art ex, VSTAR, VMAX) is rarer (~14% of the slot in standard sets) and features extended artwork without a narrative scene.
How do you tell IR and SIR apart visually?
Illustration Rares (IR) show the Pokémon full-page with a clean frame. Special Illustration Rares (SIR) add a narrative scene (trainer, setting, action) filling the entire card — and they're scarcer (~10% vs ~4.5% of the rare+ slot in a standard Mega Evolution set).
Why does the C → HR hierarchy matter when buying?
It tells you how much volume to open: a RR often appears within 2–3 packs, a SIR usually needs an ETB (9 packs) or more, a Hyper Rare may require a display (36). rateTCG maps these tiers to per-set pull rates so you can budget realistically.
