A practical ladder for players / collectors
- Common / Rare: set baseline, often bulk.
- Super Rare: more foil, still accessible.
- Ultra Rare: gold name; many playables and mid chases.
- Secret Rare: classic core-set chase treatment.
- Starlight / Collectors / QCSR…: premium treatments by product; often high TCGPlayer quotes.
Concrete case: ripping 3 packs at ~$5
Three packs at ~$5 (~$15) mostly yield Common/Rare and sometimes Super/Ultra. Expecting a Secret Rare "because I spent $15" is not a statistical plan. If your Secret sits at $25–40 NM on TCGPlayer, the single often beats emotional ripping.
Foil, 1st Edition, reprint: three different axes
- Rarity: Common → Secret / premium.
- Edition / print: 1st vs Unlimited vs OTS / Legendary reprints.
- Condition: Near Mint vs played — a played Secret can lose to an NM Ultra.
Align all three axes before comparing eBay or TCGPlayer listings, or you will mismatch a Starlight NM with an Unlimited Ultra light played.
